Throughout January and March, every Wednesday, our incredible instructors imparted knowledge and skills in Ukrainian Sign Language to 85 students. Among them were not only interested residents but also 50 representatives of the State Emergency Service (SES), 3 social workers, and 5 medical professionals who aspire to be more accessible to all citizens.
The importance of sign language courses for government officials and local self-government bodies lies in their key positions where they must ensure accessibility and equality for all citizens. Knowledge of sign language helps them communicate effectively with people with hearing impairments, ensuring their rights to access necessary services and information.
Rescuers, medics, and social workers often find themselves in situations where quick and accurate communication can save lives or improve a patient's condition. Proficiency in Ukrainian Sign Language allows them to interact effectively with deaf or partially deaf individuals, providing them with necessary assistance and support in critical situations.
Knowledge of sign language is particularly crucial for medical professionals in urgent situations where there may be a need to communicate with patients who cannot or do not wish to use written language or gestures. This enables better healthcare delivery and enhances patient satisfaction with the services received.
For social workers, skills in Ukrainian Sign Language are a necessary tool to ensure equal opportunities and access to social services for all segments of the population, including deaf citizens. This helps improve their quality of life and ensures their inclusion in society on equal terms with other citizens.
