On November 27, 2024, Ukrainian Sign Language courses for police and State Emergency Service employees in Ivano-Frankivsk region were successfully completed. 40 police officers and 40 rescuers completed the training, which began on October 30. Participants received basic knowledge and practical skills in communicating in sign language, which will help them interact more effectively with people with hearing impairments in various situations.

According to the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, as of 2021, sign language is the main means of communication for over 40,000 Ukrainians, and for over 200,000 - their native language. However, the war unleashed by Russia in 2022 led to a significant increase in the number of people with hearing impairments due to injuries sustained as a result of hostilities.

Police officers and rescuers often work in crisis situations, where the ability to quickly and accurately communicate with all citizens is extremely important. Thanks to these courses, they will be able to better understand the needs of people with hearing impairments and provide them with assistance.

The NGO "Gesture of Help", which organized these courses, emphasizes that inclusion is an integral part of a strong and cohesive society. Training sign language for critical infrastructure specialists is a step towards ensuring equal access to assistance for all citizens, regardless of their capabilities.

Thank you to all the partners and participants who made this project possible. Together we are moving towards an inclusive future!
